The origins of the Eurovision

Not many know the origins of the Eurovision, how this came to be. The particular situation which triggered such a huge event, and a following like no other.

It’s almost comical to think that back in the 1950s, as Europe rebuilt itself after being torn apart during the Second World War. Switzerland based European Broadcasting Union (EBU), wished to conduct a television experiment. Which involved one international terrestrial microwave link. For this huge experiment to succeed, all the members of the EBU combined their broadcasting technology resources, into one network, to transmit in live television. For the test to achieve the desired results, EBU required a suitable light entertainment. The event that would bring together the countries of the EBU, and attract viewing on a global scale.

The First Eurovision

The first Eurovision Song Contest was the ideal solution, an idea that was born in Monaco, back in January, 1955. During a meeting of the European Broadcasting Union, chaired by Marcel Bezencon. Originally, this contest was known as the Eurovision Grand Prix. Was approved by the European Broadcasting Union General Assembly, in Rome, on the 19th of October, of the same year. The contest was first referred to as the “Eurovision” in the London Evening Standard, in 1951, by British journalist, George Campey.

The concept of a singing contest came about after due reconsideration, and has since then kept on evolving. It has grown into a very important worldwide occasion, and has achieved a well-deserved ranking on the European television calendar. The contest created by EBU, was the first major live TV show to be transmitted in all its represented nations simultaneously. These included Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Netherlands.

First Winner

Since its inception, the Eurovision Song Contest has hosted more than fifty countries, and there have been sixty contests. This contest’s name, shorted to Eurovision, or ESC, is decorated as one of the longest nonstop television shows in the world. It has featured world famous singers, such as Johnny Logan, Cliff Richard, ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, Celine Dion, Vicky Leandros, and Engelbert Humperdink, as well as other not so memorable names. It is estimated that this non-sporting event attracts an annual audience of between 100 million, and 600 million international viewers.

The first Eurovision Song Contest, inspired by the renowned Italian Sanremo Festival. Was held in the Swiss resort of Lugano, on the 24th of May, 1956, at the Teatro Kursaal. The show lasted for one hour and forty minutes, and it was hosted by Lohengrin Filipello. Accompanying the seven participating country’s singers, who sang two original songs each of less than three and a half minutes, was a twenty-four strong orchestra, led by Fernando Paggi. Since not many people in those days owned a television set, the contest was primarily a radio show. However, some cameras taped the show for those few Europeans who could actually watch it.

The winner of the first Eurovision Song Contest, as announced by the head of the judging panel, was Switzerland’s song, “Refrain”. It was performed by Lys Assia, who was the only Swiss contestant to ever win this contest. Switzerland did in fact win another song, in 1988, but it was performed by the famous singer of Canadian origin, Celine Dion.

Eurovision Regulation

Initially, only solo artists were allowed to participate in the contest, as groups were banned until the 1970s. The broadcasters from Denmark, the United Kingdom and Austria, missed the deadline to participate in this first Eurovision Song Contest. They appeared a year later.

Two jury members from all the participating countries were sent to Lugano. To hold a secret vote on the songs. Since the jury members from Luxembourg couldn’t make the trip. The European Broadcasting Union allowed Swiss nationals to act on their behalf. During voting, the jury was allowed to vote for any country they deemed deserved their vote, which also included their own. The voting procedure had raised some eye-brows, as the voting scores were never made public. This left a lot of speculation, and even after five decades of attempts to reconstruct the voting. Even after interviewing the members of the jury, never lead to any reliable answers.

Eurovision Winning Artists

The first of these contests was not won on points, like today’s contests. Instead by each participating country casting two votes, with just the winner being announced. Throughout the years, there have been numerous voting methods. The systems which stand out most are the awarding of points to countries by televoters, or jurors. The country accumulating the most number of points is declared the winner

With twenty-six different countries winning the contest, Ireland has been the country with the highest number of wins, a total of seven. Include four times in five years, in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. The country with the longest history of disappointments, after forty-eight attempts, is Portugal. In 2009, Alexander Rybak’s winning score was the highest, with 387 points. The only performer to have won more than once, is Johnny Logan. The Irish singer won the 1987 contest with “What’s Another Year”, and he won with “Hold Me Now”, in 1992. His songwriting genius saw singers like Linda Martin winning the contest, in 1992, with “Why Me?”

Winning a contest, like the Eurovision, presents the winners to capitalize on the success on an international scale, amid a flood of publicity. Sweden’s ABBA, who won the 1974 contest with their song “Waterloo”, is a typical example. Their career rocketed into the spotlight following their win, to become one of the most successful bands of the era. Celine Dion is another winner who achieved international fame with her winning song for Switzerland, “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi”, in 1988. These cases are rare, as other singers weren’t as fortunate, and didn’t result in any long-term career boost following their winning the Eurovision.
